Business Line Rental – Why is it different to Residential?

We often see residential line rental advertised at a reduced cost in comparison with a business phone line. A number of businesses will be tempted to save a couple of pounds a month and have a residential line to run their business instead of a business phone line. But what is the difference? Is it worth it?

Residential and business phone lines run over a simple copper pair cable between the local exchange and the end user's property; this is the simplest form of a telephone line.

So what is the difference?

Well, a high majority of business rely on their business phone line to run day to day tasks. For example, a customer would like to make an order for one of your products/services – what is an average order to your business? £50, £250 or £2,500? How many enquires do you receive daily?

If the same business had saved a few pounds on having a residential line instead of a business phone line and incurred a fault. The SLA (Service Level Agreement) given to a residential line would mean it would take a minimum of 48 hours to fix the fault. That could mean a number of customers not being able to contact your business. Now, do you think it’s still worth the couple of pounds a week saving?

Business line rental is crucial for all businesses and the difference is simply due to the SLA’s time taken to fix a fault. The SLA’s target  for a standard business phone line is the next working day (Care Level 2). Care Level 3 goes a step further and guarantees to fix the fault the same day if you have reported it before 13:00hrs.

“Not many people contact us via the phone, our customers walk in our shop/office”

That’s fine – but do you use a card payment facility which is run on a phone line? If the answer is yes, then the same issue still applies. Simply, your card machine would not work.

If you run business broadband on your phone line and you have an issue, you will be without broadband for the same period. That could mean you are paying staff to sit around until the fault has been repaired.
